“Mom… Do you feel better yet?” asks the boy at the hotel window overlooking the park.
“Not yet, sweetheart. I’m really sorry,” moans Mom from her pillow, the greenish pallor of her face not completely faded.
Accursed shrimp cocktail from last night’s dinner… unavoidable, of course. But to happen in the middle of his special trip to Disneyland was a disappointment rivaled by little.
“It’s not your fault, Mom,” he sighs in reply as he turns back to the teasing view.
Disneyland’s Grand Californian Hotel, nestled a few steps and a private entrance away from the California Adventure park was a rare and expensive treat to stay. Mom had been saving for months to make this weekend special for him. Now he could only watch the fun below while she recovered in bed.
It was very disappointing, but he really did understand that it wasn’t her fault.
Yet the view from his hotel window continued to tease. Straight ahead he could see the bouncing circular boats and hear the joyous screams of the soaking wet passengers on the rapids ride. In the distance, he could make out the Mickey themed Ferris wheel and the frightening Tower ride he’d sworn to never attempt. And, slightly to the left on the pathway down below, a giant wooden bear statue stood watch over his favorite treat.
The vendor cart sat below with its old-fashioned writing across the front that read “Lemonade”. Hanging from its canopy, a strand of a dozen bags of faint pink and blue cotton candy. It was one of the few things he’d looked forward to most on this trip. The fluffy sweet stuff dissolving on his tongue, washed away by the tang of the lemonade. He worried that he might miss out this trip.
“Do you think we’ll be able to go to the park today, Mom?” he asked without turning away from the view.
“I promise, baby. Just as soon as the room stops spinning. I love you, and I’m really sorry.”
“Thanks, Mom. I love you too.”
Mom always kept her promises. He could wait patiently.
